Hello, I’m looking to air-layer a sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and I’m wondering if we are too late in the summer to be encouraging the plant to make roots. I have a bunch of japanese maple (Acer japonicum) air-layers that I started about 7/1/25 and have not yet rooted, but the foliage looks very healthy still. Anything helps!
Can you keep the tree from freezing over the winter? If so, you will continue to get callus formation and perhaps some root growth over the winter. If it will freeze, I would probably wait until next June as the leave harden off.
