Root over rock limestone

Has anyone had any success growing onto limestone? I’m concerned that the roots might find it an inhospitable environment. I’m thinking of hawthorn if you think that would make a difference. Thanks in anticipation :crossed_fingers:

Tony Tickle has done it with limestone. In the second half of this video you can see the full landscape he has created. Not quite the traditional root over rock but you get a good idea of what is possible.

It’s no problem for the species I’ve tried it with (Acer campestre), but make sure your are using a hard limestone rather then one that weathers freely. Been growing this on a rock for a few years and health is fine.

Many thanks to both of you for your responses. :grinning:
