Nature's Bonsai Trees (trees living in the wild)

Just came across this tree the other day in Bandelier National Monument, just a bit away from the visitor center. I believe it’s a ponderosa pine, as they’re all over this area of the park. It’s hard to tell, but it’s a very large old tree. And perhaps the strangest growth pattern I’ve seen from a pine in person. What would have caused this awkward branch structure? Just interesting to contemplate. PNG
