Nature's Bonsai Trees (trees living in the wild)

It IS nice to see this thread get some love! i thought when i started it that is was a dud… Like, “i guess people DON’T take photos of trees when traveling” lol. Anyway great shots, that tree from Hawaii is outrageous!

Catching up on the archive, I dug up some pictures from a trip I took to Yosemite 8 years ago or so.

Here is what I believe is a Sierra Juniper from Olmstead Point. This is the vista toward the valley from Tuolumne side of the park (the backside of the Valley, from most photographs).

This tree lives in the pool above Nevada Falls (a hike from the Valley). Didn’t get a picture of the whole thing, the roots were the most interesting. The tree was alive if I recall correctly.

Also, Mirai team, if you’ve never been to Yosemite, then you definitely have to go to the Valley. But, for my money, Tuolumne is the best part of the park. It is classic High Sierra country, with some of the best granite domes and peaks in the range. I grew up in the Sierras and went to Yosemite at least once a year growing up (as well as spending lots of time in the mountains around Tahoe including Desolation Wilderness). Winter time is pretty magical in the Valley (as is the Mariposa grove), but unfortunately Tuolumne is closed once the snow hits.

And through the wonder of modern technology, I found that last tree on Google Street View. It looks like it isn’t always submerged in water, sitting right on the edge of the pool (zoom straight ahead once or twice).

Just came across this tree the other day in Bandelier National Monument, just a bit away from the visitor center. I believe it’s a ponderosa pine, as they’re all over this area of the park. It’s hard to tell, but it’s a very large old tree. And perhaps the strangest growth pattern I’ve seen from a pine in person. What would have caused this awkward branch structure? Just interesting to contemplate. PNG

The Mt. Baker Wilderness is one of favorite places, the trees take a fair share of abuse from the elements.
With the most snowfall in the world, we got dumped on in the 98-99 season with 1140 inches, that’s 95 feet! Snow and wind create some of these beauties :evergreen_tree::metal:t2::grinning::mountain_snow::snowflake:

I had so many pictures and comments from a recent trip to Victoria Island I felt I needed to do a whole separate post on this topic. Victoria Island, Natures Costal Bonsai

Out enjoying an Easter weekend walk with the family I saw these two trees. We often take advantage of (arguably even overuse) trunk chopping to get the trunk thickness we want, but it’s a nice reminder that this really does occur in nature.

I also really liked the asymmetry in this old Willow.

When did you live in the area? We might have crossed paths at one point.

I lived down by Seattle but we had a recreational home in Maple falls and we pretty much spent summer there as kids. When i was able to drive on my own we spent quite a bit of the ski season up at the resort. Not sure if it qualifies as home but it feels like it

Reviving this old thread because I just went to Utah and had my MIND BLOWN!

It was my first time hiking out there with my Bonsai Glasses on, and while I’ve hiked the region multiple times before, I had never seen it with this perspective. Top pics below, full album here.
