Kishu Juniper Styling

I picked up this Chinese Juniper (ct Kishu) in November 2022 for £15 at a local bonsai club.

It had some structural issues, mainly the bar branch and nearly all the foliage on one side of the tree, but it was too cheap to leave behind. Repoted last Spring with an initial styling not long before.

What do you think? Opinions and critiques wanted!

It appears that you jinned some of the branches on the right side. If that is that case, I think you will want to tilt the tree a bit more to the left to make a slanting style tree and emphasize the movement to the left. You can get the idea of that by propping the left side of the pot up a bit and then styling the branches at that trunk angle.

I would agree with Marty. If you are willing to I think there is a reasonably significant design change to be made here. As you point out there isnt enough foliage on the right side to which means it is hard to see a “balanced” tree from a foliage perspective.

I would be trying to put a little bit more more movement into the trunk and shifting things/angle to make more of a slanting style. I would also think about trying to put bends in the trunk and/or branches to try and compact the tree down, bring the foliage from the upper branches closer to the lower branches.

Obviously each tree is valuable but at £15 maybe a good opportunity to be a bit more creative / make more of a transformational change to the tree!

Good luck, look forward to seeing the results!

Based on where you are now I would have been inclined to go the other way and get the extra movement. Then try to swing the big low branch on the left to the back then forward to for shorten it some. Right now the foliage is hiding the best movement on your trunk You did a good job and it’s a great piece and price point to explore

I just realized that you need to prop the right side of the pot to increase the slant to the left and then do the styling if you decide to accentuate the movement to the left.

Bend it baby:)
