Fungal issue on cryptomeria?

My cryptomeria is getting brown parts on some of the foliage but then continuing to grow new green tips. The orangish brown foliage isn’t dry, just discolored but feels the same to the touch as the healthy green foliage

I’ve sprayed with copper fungicide several times but the problem kept getting worse. So I’ve switched to Daconil but it doesn’t seem like the issue has stopped.

Tree is in a pond basket with soil and pumice and my other three Sugi’s are perfectly fine in the same setup and I’ve had them all for 3 years or so and haven’t had problems with location or care… but if anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated!!

What’s the weather been like?

Springy and no response to fungicides means it’s probably not a fungus. Pond basket is super susceptible to wind drying it out. New England this year had a really weird start to spring with alternating freezing and 70/80 degree days. These things could cause the browning like this which cryptomeria will do as an environmental protection.

I’m in SoCal by the beach so we don’t get any frost. Even winter is 50s at the lowest… the weather this spring been lows of 60 and highs of 70s all spring. And a lot of overcast days. We get a bit of wind but none of my other cryptomeria are exhibiting the same symptoms… thankfully

SoCal. hmm. Im in the bay area. Us west coasters have had a pretty mild Spring as you describe, so that’s probably not it. What’s going on with the other trees is not a dealbreaker for environmental factors because probabilistically they could all be weak but this one is showing. I’m at a loss. Someone with more experience will have to take if from here.

This looks like my coastal redwoods in the spring (I am in Southern California, coastal) only recently learned it was a fungal problem and I started treating with a fungicide. This spring my redwood looks much better.

Which fungicide did you use?

I used a copper fungicide spray from the garden center. I have treated with cleary’s in the past on other redwoods too

I’ve used several fungicides and can’t seem to get the browning to stop.

Does this look like root rot to anyone? New foliage is growing from the brown parts but lately the new foliage has been browning as well.

I find it less likely there’s root rot in a pond basket but at this point I’m completely stumped.

Stupid question but why are you treating it with chemicals when you don’t know what the issue is?

How could that possibly help?

Many people use these fungicides as preventative measures throughout the year as well. So I feel comfortable treating with them at suggested intervals. Also with no other recognizable symptoms in receiving a lot of speculation so I’m doing my best so other than balancing water and oxygen I can’t do much

Cheers

I get it and it is your tree so spray away.

As you know once it goes brown that color will never return to green.
Pick it off, or cut it off and see if you get a positive response.
If it was a fungus and you treated it, why do you still think you have a problem?

The brown won’t return to green again it needs to be removed or lived with but if you have positive signs of growth with no visible signs of infection it seems pointless to just keep applying fungicide until you actually identify if it was fungus, over watering, a nutrient deficiency etc etc.

Not my farm, not my pig
I am confused as to what you expect to see.

You have new growth, a positive sign of health
It seems you are chasing a problem that doesn’t exist

It could have gotten too dry once, to much sun, too much nitrogen, salts, etc etc etc
Or it may have had a fungus and you treated that. There are just so many variables to chase.

I am curious what signs of health that you don’t see?
Prune it back and see what it does

Best of luck

I think you might have misread my post somewhere along the line.

The browning is not stopping. It’s continuing to spread over the tree. Yes new green buds are appearing but not as quick as the browning. So the problem is persisting and getting worse unfortunately. And yes - I’ve treated with several fungicides but I’m not seeing results, hence the reason I’m on here asking if anyone has more insight.

I’ve have pruned some sections back and removed brown tips but haven’t had any positive results from that.

Yes 100% my misunderstanding
My mistake
Best wishes hope you figure it out
