California Juniper - Burls / growth on live veins

I just acquired this California juniper which while very beautiful still has many things which need to be addressed. After getting the tree home and starting to clean up the live vein I realized how intrusive the burls on the only existing vein are. I understand that cutting these off could be problematic and cause some ugly calluses, can anything be done here? Should I be concerned about the underlying issues that may have caused the girls to begin with?

Any help would be much appreciated

Yup, this looks a bit unsightly there.
If you decide to cut them off, I’d suggest going really slowly. There was a reason why it wasn’t cut.
It could end up seriously damaging or killing the live vein.
Best guess, it was caused by removing some backbudding.
