I’m in a beginners Bonsai class in WI, and this was the tree I picked that came with the class. We trimmed and wired (with errors) in class. No repotting, because leaves were new and tender. The tree came up from FL a week prior, our nights are still in the 30’s F, so it goes in after sunset. At least two other plants that my classmates picked have aphids, but i don’t see any on mine. I use the bamboo stick for guidance watering. Is this a disease, pests, or something I’m doing wrong. Please help guide me. Branches are even shriveling up daily. Thank you. Laura. I’ve owned it for 9 days.
Hi Laura, the tree is most likely reacting to the temperature changes from Florida to Wisconsin (if I have my abbreviations right), and between outside and inside. It might shed all its leafs. I’d keep it outdoor and only into a shed (or something with low temperatures) when freezing conditions are expected. I would expect it to recover in the course of spring.
Once you have investigated all the usual cures check for mites. I once bought a Chinese elm that had an infestation of Cyclamen Mites. As these mites are 1/4 the size of spider mites, I overlooked them for a long time. They were harder to kill than spider mites. The guy at American Beauty Hydroponics store recommended a product from the cannabis industry. Nuk Em from Flying Scull which did the trick: https://www.flyingskull.net/flying-skull-nuke-em-1-quart… good luck.
