Stumped:punica cinensis

I bought this Granatum Cinensis last Augut at an event Although I had no idea what I was doing having just decided to take up bonsai as a hobby. At the time it had stems and leaves. I live in the Sacramento Valley where our summers are frequently well over 100°. I didn’t realize I should have let the poor little thing acclimatize. Long story short, after a pretty rough summer, this short, stumpy little fellow was left denuded and had only two stems left (that you might make out in the photo.) One of which is completely dead. It started sprouting this spring and I’ve left it to grow to this point but I’m not sure where to go from here. The tips are still green while the lower parts have lignified. I feel as if I should let it go another season before I start shaping. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
