Pine branch pad design

Technical question regarding pad design in pines - should secondaries be alternated as in juniper? Or is it okay to leave secondaries directly opposite (i.e., like bar branches essentially on primary branches).
Thanks!

Mike

I always strive to have them alternate or simply divide and get smaller. Having two opposite of each other along a main branch will eventually lead to swelling.

Thanks, Marty. That is kind of what I thought/assumed, but I couldn’t find a specific mention of this in the library videos for pines, in contrast to what is clearly stated in videos relating to pad formation and wiring for junipers. …

This applies to all trees alternating usually is preferred

Thanks, Rob. Good to know/ have this confirmed.

Generally speaking, we want branch divisions to be in sets of two.

You can either cut the leader of the branch and have the side branch become the new leader or removed one of the two branches, avoiding bar branches. Cutting the main branch will slow down the grub slightly and create a high degree of movement.

It’s fairly important to make the right decisions early on. Once the branch becomes larger, it becomes painful to go back and change the decision.

Look at the branch pattern on quality developed trees to get an idea of where you’re heading.
