New Bench Material

Not Sure this is the right place foot this but in the largest Winter Solstice Recapfor 2024 you mentioned that while your Wood Benches served you well they weren’t suited to the Pacific Northwest.
What material did you use instead for the new Benches

I believe he went with a metal footing for his new benches

From listening to the podcast multiple times i had the feeling they wanted to move on from wood as the bench material. was not the optimal choice for the environments factors at Mirai. I beleve that he said
Realizing the Pacific Northwest was not kind to wood
Anyway thanks for your response

I believe he did move away with wood with the rebuild of the greenhouse, I don’t know about the whole garden. Maybe someone on here that’s been could give you a better answer

In an effort to cut down on fungal issues I switched from wood and cement blocks to commercial restaurant shelving which I bought used. There are wire shelves and plastic shelves that work great:

I often cut the vertical posts to a height I want. You can combine wire shelves to make tiered displays.

The new benches are made of steel, for longevity! There have been several pictures on reels and instagram posts ones the last few months!

I would think marine lumber would work really well for benches too

Thank You. I appreciate the reply

Great Suggestion. I am starting to create a more formal garden and all ideas are welcome

Decorative concrete carved to your liking

Nebeech you selling sculpted benches now?

nothing is off the table. if the weather ever gets about 40 degrees here I have some ideas I want to explore.

I was thinking of making a mold to make some sides for benches but the cinder blocks were to cheap and convenient. Sadly they are very ugly lol. Maybe make a deceptive mold to replace the blocks then I could at least have a better looking side.

Thats a good idea and depending on the shape you want it could be quick and easy…You could also just use the concrete blocks as you base, Get some structural mortar and mesh fiber and stamp it, carve it or put you own flavor on it. Rebar the cinderblocks or use spray foam on the inside of the cinder blocks first though

Heitzman moved into concrete stands a few years ago for the longevity and I couldn’t even imagine what that cost to purchase but you could get a similar feel follow the process I mentioned above

Well my ide would be to make it so I can drystack the base and move it if I needed to. Originally I was going to form up something to make it but I need a bench now lol perhaps in the future I’ll make something better looking.

Sneak peak. Needed a stand for a cascade black pine. Not done yet but felt like it fit to your future needs

Well that’s interesting

Did you color it after the first few pictures or did it have something to do with drying?
