Moving from Seattle to Flordia - how to rehome my trees?

Howdy Folks,

I am moving from Seattle Area to Florida and I’m pretty sure none of my trees will thrive there. I’ve got about 30 trees from junipers, pines, spruces, maples, elms, hawthorns, oaks, larches, and more; all of them live outside year round.

Questions:

  1. How would y’all go about selling them? I’ve bought lots of trees but never sold so really do not know what the way to do that is, particularly because I would prefer to sell to folks who may be less likely to kill the trees than a 1st timer.
  2. Do you have a suggested resource to identify what trees may be able to live in Florida?

Thank you!!

I can help a bit, asI did the opposite move 20 years ago; from Florida to Oregon. Bonsai auction sites on Facebook usually give best results money-wise, but the tree may not be bought by anyone who can care for it. And you have to ship it, which can be a PIA, and in heat of summer may not give best results. If you belong to Puget Sound Bonsai Club, maybe put a feeler out there about private sales. Lastly; I’m sure other PNW members would be interested, and no shipping. What am I saying… I’m interested.

I think the Puget Sound Bonsai club will be having a club sale event in the next few weeks. I don’t know the specifics but you might be able to sell some trees there.

Copy that; thank you! I have photos of the trees on a google folder if anyone is interested. One is a pine I got from Telperion Farms, and that one in particular should go to someone who isn’t buying their 1st tree with some extra b-day money haha. Bonsai2021 - Google Drive

Here’s a link to the Puget Sound Bonsai Associations page where you can find info on bringing your trees to the auction if you have interest. A good way to offload decent trees to people who will be more likely to offer quality care to them.

Howdy! Thank you! I’m not sure I can get some in the auction due to time line of my move. And, I have 30 to sell and only 5 that can be put it from one person haha - you know anyone wanting more trees?

None seems like a big number. There are lots of bonsai folks in Florida. “Where in Florida are you moving?”…is a big question. Mirai has recently partnered with David Cutchin, a Floridian who has encouraged Mirai members to reach out with questions. Wigerts, Grove Bonsai, Mike Lane, Adam Lavine, many others are known in the FLA. If you are unable to keep and care for your trees in your new home in Florida that’s one thing. If it were me I’d be reaching out to David or Mike or others mentioned above or local clubs in FLA via Instagram in the new area I’d be moving to and see what trees won’t survive and make my plans accordingly.

You can just drop them off at my place in Mississippi on your move down…and visit them every so often :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

i would love to give #8 and #9 all my lovin’ been focusing on the deciduous conifers, i love the little rule breakers

I’m right down in Portland, so pick up would be straight forward. I could even transport for any others that are sold to folks along the way, i have a large station wagon with good climate control and my music selection is hopefully not offensive to the planted types.
