Kusamono positioning

I just got in a few cypress knees and they turned put a bit wider at the base than I expected. I planned to use them as part of a kusamono planting for my bald cypress but directly beside my tree would ruin the scale of the tree. Is it unheard of to position a kusamono in front of the tree? I plan to have the tree on a short stand for clear view and use the 3 knees in front to add depth and use their width to my advantage. Any thoughts - or other ideas - are surely welcome.
