Hi all,
what is your pruning/pinching routine on J. Procumbens Nana? I recently learnt that has a different behavior than other junipers (running vs clumping - Is it right?), so it needs different handling timings.
So, as a general yearly routine, in which time do you perform which operation? With time I mean not much the month or week but the time of the “state” of the tree (spring, budding, flush, energy -, energy +, etc.); so I can understand why you do this and don’t do that.
I have one of JPN in my collection and I think it is ready to enter the refinement stage (maybe a couple of branches still need development). In this time of the year, in Italy where I live, the new growth is hardening and in the last few weeks a shift in color happened.
Do I need to let the tree gain more energy before any intervention?
Is there an upcoming streaming covering this kind of junipers similar to the “Juniper refinement” one?
There is one about needle junipers from last year. Look it up. Juniper procumbens nana is a needle juniper.
Thanks @ThienXiang!
Actually I wasn’t considering procumbens nana as a needle juniper. Is it specified in the live stream?
Was in this stream?

This is for tier 3, I’m only tier 2…
Oh, ok. My apologies. Procumbens nana is considered needle juniper. Check you tube for Bjorn bjorholm’s sonare juniper demo
Oh I know that video! I’ll follow your advise and check it.
Thanks a lot!
Awesome! You’re welcome. Summertime is the best time to work on needle junipers.
Sorry @ThienXiang, just to be sure, could you please include the link to the demo you were mentioning?
Thanks in advance

Hi tocci .
Ryan works on and talks about procumbens nana in the " winter care " stream, tier two can watch, hope it helps
Thanks so much! I’ll run and watch it
this may be a little late but Actually, procumbens is not a needle juniper. In fact, it can attain mature foliage it just tends to have juvenile foliage. I have 3 out in my garden that have some amount of mature foliage.
Good to know. Thanks
