Feedback on some designs

Hey everyone,

I’m starting to run into a space problem. I have enough room… until I buy another tree. As my collection keeps growing, I’ve been looking for ways to use my space more efficiently.

I bought a bunch of 15 × 15 × 5 inch Anderson flats, but for smaller trees they seem like overkill. There is just too much unused space. So I designed and 3D printed some dividers that let me split a single flat into anywhere from one to four separate compartments, depending on what I need.

Does anyone see any potential issues with this approach, or is there something I’m overlooking?

The second thing I’ve been working on is a root training plate for smaller trees. I always find it difficult to securely wire young trees with small root systems into a pot or grow basket. My idea was to design a plate with built in root guides and a vertical support that I can tape the trunk to while the tree establishes itself. The plate can then be wired securely to the basket or pot, which should make the tree much more stable while also encouraging the roots to spread evenly.

This version is 4 inches, but I plan to make 6 inch and 8 inch versions as well.

I’d really appreciate any feedback. Do you see any flaws in the design or have suggestions that could make either of these ideas better?

Photos are attached. Thanks!

Man that’s a great idea. Would you be willing to share the files.i have a friend with a 3d printer.

Yes I can, I will try and get them uploaded today!

Those dividers for the flats are the heat, I’ve been doing it for years with plastic poster board, I’ve recycled from my job. Tho only issues I see with the dividers are that you have to use similar trees with similar requirements in the flat. Really tough to water each section differently. But my rule is always start with multiple trees of each species so the idea works great. I don’t really have any constructive feedback on the little tree support, I’d have to work with it for a season! I typically don’t have any constructive feedback issue with seedlings, I regularly use felt pads as root plating device, and I rarely use supports for young trees as this makes for weak trunks. If I do support them I use wire to add movement. Creative stuff, great job,
