Of course, i´m also exited for that calendar and all the other stuff, Ryan talked about, hoping it is not all limited for pro…
Still looking forward, waiting for the app…
Last tuesday Ryan said launch of the app would be yesterday. Did it happen i cant find it in the app store.
Website is revamped and looks good but need the app to really get going!
I am wondering how many people have over 25 different varieties of trees? I only plan on uploading one of each type and…I don’t THINK I have over 25 varieties. I guess I should go count though.
The care calendars are different for different stages (primary, secondary, tertiary) and presumably the app also allows you to mark when work is done. I think it’s worth flipping this on it’s head; rather than looking at whether 25 is reasonable for most people, look at whether limiting it to 25 is reasonable from an engineering cost perspective.
Hey Mirai Fam!
Ryan here. Without further ado the app is here!!! IOS launched today and we are still waiting on the Google app store to approve the Android version. Formalities. We held off on launch yesterday with the hopes they would come through. Out of our hands but it should launch any day. It is coming. So many things to discuss and I’m sure there will be questions, feedback, and all manner of thoughts about the app. Please be kind and consider a few things.
First, the app comes with your current membership. No further charges. Could we have charged? YES. Did we charge for the app? NO. Any programmers out there will see this and know how sophisticated this app is. It’s a MONSTER. We appreciate our community and what we have built together. Before you complain, just consider the cost, time, effort, and information you are getting for the same price you already pay. The goal is making you better at bonsai, not pandering to the content vacuum of modern life. What we’ve made is considered, intentional, functional, and beautiful. If you knew anything about what this app took to build and bring to life it might give you some pause, but we are not here to tell war stories, we are here to do bonsai, bring positivity to the community, and to do our best to make you better at this art form we all love.
Second, is the library going away? NO. In fact, in the coming weeks you’ll be experiencing new methods of how the library will grow and contribute to your bonsai practice. It’s not going away, it’s getting better. Give us time. If you’ve been with Mirai to this point it means you know what this team is capable of. Be patient, work on your trees, we are still here. Mirai Live is a massive platform, find another one anywhere else in bonsai. To improve it takes thought and intention. We’ve done the work, you’ll reap the rewards, but the community needs to stay positive or you’ll break the very spirit that is working so hard to provide you a better experience and elevate your bonsai skills.
Third, trees trees trees. There are phases to the app. We are not charging you for the app. You still have the library. We are not done adding to it and all the features of Mirai Live still exist. It would be ludicrous for us to launch with the finished version of the app. It’s too robust, does too many things, and we need you to use it to nuance its continued growth. USE IT FIRST and then give us feedback. It just launched. You want to track more trees, use what you have available first, you want more features, exhaust the ones that exist. Be nice y’all. The same price point that pinches us all applies to Mirai. The misconception we sit in a golden castle in bonsai nirvana with unlimited resources is a failure to realize that we are a team of 5 bringing you all this. We do it because we love bonsai and we love our community, keep that in mind. Our castle is a cabin on a hill, and our gold is rust. I’ve spent the week bouncing between working on the app launch and then preparing the garden for intense cold moving trees and doing the not so glamorous task of being a bonsai professional. It’s not all gumdrops and lollipops. I built Mirai to provide what I didn’t have and had to go to Japan to get. I love the positivity, I relish in constructive feedback, I resent negativity. We see all that you write. Thank you for contributing, but keep in mind there are real humans just like you on the other side of your screen working hard for you. The boldness of the keyboard can empower you to say things that don’t feel great. Generosity is reciprocated, I don’t have to be doing this. I do it because I love it and I hope that’s why you are here too.
Last, app content. When will there be more? SOON. It’s winter in the northern hemisphere, we launched to help you prep for spring. More academy courses are ready, another calendar is ready. Sub-genre calendars for multi-flush pines, mounding junipers, and broadleaf deciduous are in the hopper. Turn on your notifications, check your content daily, and stop worrying. I’ll say it one more time, you’re getting far more for the same price you were already paying. Mirai has you covered. Put the energy into using the app and working your trees and the app will grow before your eyes. The more time we spend responding to what you don’t have, the less time we have to give you what we’ve built.
I’m incredibly proud of the Mirai team, the designers, the programmers, and everyone who busted their butts and poured themselves into making this app. It will revolutionize bonsai education once again and we did it for you…trust me, I didn’t build this for me. This is only the beginning and the future looks bright. I love all you crazy passionate bonsai maniacs even if you go off the rails from time to time. Put the energy where it counts and we will all grow together. The high tide raises all ships and there is a vast ocean we can now sail.
Onward!
Ryan
I’m trying to log in to the app with the same username and password that are in my keychain already. I’m getting this error.
I’m guessing the system is being slammed so I’ll give it some time to try again.
I’m getting the same error message
I’ve been trying to download the app for the last two days and am getting nothing but a couple of place markers and a video about how it is supposed to work. No way to download the app or configure anything for personal preferences. No emails about downloading. I’m a Pro Level member. What do I need to do?
Very appreciative Ryan! This will be an amazing resource for us going forward. Big thank yous to you and the whole team that made it happen. You have not steered us wrong to this point and I only expect great things going forward. Some will have to adapt to change. Much grace and kindness to each all around. Best wishes to you all!
Same error here! Location Germany
Well said Ryan!
I cant understand all the people already complaining before actually even having used the app… Man we are getting spoiled with such a huge tool.
As others already have said, Ryan and the team have the best intentions and seeing as this new feature is coming to us without any further cost is unbelievable. Try and find that nowadays anywhere else. Why are you doubting them?
Yes super tuesdays are no longer a thing but as Ryan already said in the stream and now in his post there will be different things coming so just give them some more time for the love of god…
To Ryan and the team who read our posts i want to say thanks a million for the work you have done to push all of our bonsai practice. What you are providing is second to none and is very much appreciated! There will always be naysayers but there are so many that are with you and love what you do. Thanks for your passion, thanks for your work and my trees would als thank you but they are shivering a bit too much from the cold and want to preserve their energy
Take care and to all still having problems with the app hang tight i am sure there will be a solution.
I restarted my mobile, that fixed the error.
Probably the cloud/server side entity is overstressed. Give it time.
I’m a mobile consultant/dev with 15y+ experience. Based on the video, this app is a monster and incredibly hard to manage by a small non-tech company, so issues like these should be expected. With time they will be probably smoothed out and the overall experience will be good.
I can’t speak for how good it will be - that takes time and usage. But purely from a technical point of view and how much work went into it, I am guesstimating that this is huge.
Does anybody else have no sound on the videos, restarted my phone and still the same
Maybe I am the only one but I still can’t find the app in iOS App Store. Can someone tell me the exact name of the app? I have tried Mirai Mobile, Bonsai Mirai, Mirai Bonsai, Bonsai, Mirai. And I got absolutely nothing.
Keep on Keepin’ on, Ryan and Mirai. You guys are doing amazing. Thank you.

Perspective from someone that builds apps. Targeting folks that don’t know much about the industry. Trying to keep it short and on topic for this thread.
User feedback is incredibly valuable. Ryan is giving everyone a user feedback channel. His advice is spot on and outlines how get involved in a positive, constructive manner. Use the app, find items that you think will bring you the most value and give feedback. Use the feedback channel he is recommending, this makes it easier for his team to collect, compile and evolve the app.
Costs. I’m not debating this point, just bringing perspective. Apps are everywhere, lots are free, lots are cost money, but we tend to take them for granted and sometimes have unrealistic expectations around costs. It costs money to: conceptualize apps, design apps, develop apps, test apps, beta apps, add new functional feature to apps, keep apps updated as software evolves. It also costs money to host apps. Hosting costs rise as more people use the app and as they enter more data in the app. As long as the app is used and changing these cost never end.
Not available to the public on a general search of the app store. Click on the download button/link in the Mirai email that went out yesterday. It will take you right to the app in the app store.

I would argue, in Bonsai relativity, $18/mo IS cheap. I’ll spend more on soil, pots, wire, trees, wood for boxes, workshops, and travel for bonsai events. All by FAR exceeds $216 a year.
