I’m curious about just how much direct sunlight a tree needs. I do know that it depends on the species, climate, and so on, but that being the case, it seems that most outdoor trees do fine in a mix of shade and sunlight even though the advice might be 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. I have a workbench on which I have my small collection. I would say that my trees get indirect sun for a good part of the day, and shade the rest of day. I live in Southern Wisconsin, btw.

Well I make no claim to be an expert. however if you don’t give a tree enough sunlight the leaves will get larger to gather what it can . So that might be a indicator that it’s in to much shade. Where I am it regularly gets over 100 in the summer so I have to be on top of things or I can get scorched leaves. No pines and junipers seem to thrive in as much hot sun as I can give them. So you said anything tender and delicate I will be cautious of but you have a totally different climate than I do so you may be able to get away with things I can’t.
