I’m wondering if the raffia you can find in most craft stores used for decoration/package tying can be used for doing heavy bends on trees or is there a big difference between this stuff and what you’d buy from a bonsai supply store?

I think the stuff at craft stores is shorter strand than bonsai versions, which means you have more knots to tie them together.
Otherwise I think they are all equivalent.

I have used both and the splicing of raffia is a skill that increases with repetition and practice… but buying raffia that has length and width is beneficial when working with large trunk and branches. The price of some stores makes buying many small bunches less attractive.
