I have a Foemina that I’ve let extend all of last year and it desperately needs a top reduction as well as a heavy prune. Buds are starting to extend here in SoCal and I’m wondering if now would be the time to trim things back and reduce the apex? Or am I supposed to wait until summer for that?
thanks in advance!
Mine are really starting to get going as well. I will be at the Huntington on Saturday and check with some folks there.

Checked with others at the Huntington today (I volunteer in the bonsai nursery). They said best time is now as the tree has maximum energy stored before heavy growth begins in a few weeks. In the summer we just pinch growth to maintain pads if we can keep up with it. Otherwise just use scissors almost like a hedge trimmer to bring back to shape. Downside with scissors is the tips will die back. It looks better a few weeks later but the tree looks a little sad in the meantime.
