Does anyone else do this? I found a branch in my back yard from one of my tall virginia cedars (juniper) and thought, why not practice on this? All of my trees are packed away for winter so might as well, right?!

Yes - it is a great way to practice skills.
I have done in the past when transitioning from aluminium wire to copper wire. Saves and breakages on precious trees.

Did it myself when practicing application of raffia and heavy copper wire. I was actually surprised at how stable the branch was in the clamp.

Also - practiced grafting this way.
Great idea! Never grafted before so better to practice this way than on one of my good trees.
