Hello Mirai members, I have been searching for info that I had previously heard about callus forming at the base of a trident maple air layer. I did my first two air layers this year, a shishigashira maple that has rooted nicely into the sphagnum moss, and a trident maple that callused severely at cut site. I’m not sure how that happened, but I assume a bridge of cambium remained. I remember recently Ryan talking specifically on this problem but cannot find it in my search. It may be too late for a redo, and I may cut it off as there is a lot of growth forming below the cut site. Does anyone know where to find that info, or have experience with trident maple callus?

Yeah, I believe the stream is called “airlayer separation.” Ryan went back in and reopened the callous and removed the bridged cambium and set back out to form roots. He then revisited the airlayer the following year and removed the airlayer after satisfactory root growth.
