It makes sense for nursery stock Juniper, pines and maybe a older sheen based tree. Its sort of a play on ground layering …without the advantage of already having some roots started. Although in his example it was coming out of a pretty aggregate soil. It seems like a intelligent conservative approach, which is great if you have a piece of material that is above your skill level. If you have a something in clay (bagged & burlapped) I would give this a try .
