Pot dimension for shohin

Hi all,

I just got through watching Ryan’s video on styling a nursery stock blue rug juniper. https://live.bonsaimirai.com/library/video/nursery-stock-shohin-creation. I’m curious about the pot dimensions for small bonsai such as that one. The basic advice is that that the depth should be about the width of the trunk right above the nebari, but that the pot Ryan used is deeper. I was wondering if the guidelines are different for shohin and what they might be.

Thanks in advance.

David

My observation is the shohin pots are often a bit deeper for the tree size than those used with larger trees. This gives a larger soil reserve for the tree size so that it does not dry as quickly and the pot does not heat as quickly in the sun. Ryan may have also used a larger than normal pot since this was the first repot of nursery stock and cutting the roots too far might have caused issues with the tree’s health.

Makes sense. Thanks!
