I’m interested in knowing whether it is worth going from a nursery pot specifically to a plastic training pot rather than a relatively inexpensive but not display ready ceramic pot. I understand the cost savings but just trying to get a sense if the plastic pot step is common and/or necessary. Also, is there any concern about plastic leaching into the soil?
Developing big trunk in 35 year old Ficus. 30 years in bottom plastic pot with roots growing through the drainage holes! Moved to smaller mica pot… Because ceramic would not take the arial roots. Very vigorous growth with sunshine and artificial light in the winter.
Mica pots specifically have some other benefits, they insulate the roots well from heat and cold and come in a large variety of sizes and shapes. If your trees require rootwork, reduction these are excellent for working the roots down while still getting good development on them.
Great source for mica is Wigerts in Florida, they have the largest selection I know of and fair pricing.
