Needle juniper garden yamadori

Here’s a juniper that was dug out of the yard at the end of March. I actually thought that it had died at one point, but it’s been growing in beautifully for the last month.

So, how patient do I need to be? I’d like to prune or pinch the tips to try and get more back-budding. I don’t want to end with all the foliage at the ends of the branches. Should I do anything to it this year? Wait till next spring?
Note: I’m calling this a needle juniper, but I’m actually not sure what species it is. It’s a juniper, and has needles. It seems to have grown itself from seed. As far as I know, it’s never had “mature” foliage.
