From what I understand, there is a very short window to repot Hemlock trees. I bought this tree from a nursery on Washington State last summer and it seems to be doing well. I’m wondering if the tree is ready for some heavy root work. Here are some photos
Howdy,
From most of the buds, it looks like you still have time. You’ll see them swell and almost double in size with a light brown or, more likely a neon green tint to them.
I would also expect the strong ones to become almost hairy if you will
keep checking every day and have your pot, substrate, wire, mesh etc ready. Managed to move in 2011 from the Seattle area before I got any serious Tsuga experience but I would imagine that you would have at least a week window in which it’s okay to remove and adjust the rootball as you need to in your given circumstance. Remember to leave some untouched.
First rule of hemlock: Don’t even think about going anywhere near ‘bare rooting a hemlock’.
Oh, ya, they do not like hot / dry roots. Add in the 1/16 for water retention…
You can thank me later…

Thanks for the information! It was in aver large nursery container but luckily it wasn’t root bound at all. I was able to fit the tree in an Anderson flat without disturbing much roots.
I live in Portland Oregon zone 8b and have another mt hemlock in a large container as well. The buds to me look like they have either flushed out or haven’t started to show. What do you think?
