Translation of above:

“First of all, thank you to the whole mirai team for your excellent work. Maybe it is possible to add subtitles to the videos as it may be easier for the translation, for those who do not understand English very well I would be very happy about that.”

Since I last posted here, you guys covered Alberta spruce nursery stock & Fundamental bonsai design which is awesome!

Still would love: Giant Sequoia, more fir (they are amazing and even though there is a natural Abies Alba here in Europe, NOBODY uses them) Common Juniper, Hawthorn, Birch.

In general though, I think more nursery stock is going to be awesome for everyone as it’s accessible, everyone gets to re-learn the objective steps in grabbing the best from the material and it’s fun to see how Ryan goes from “this is nursery stock” to “I REALLY like this tree”.

Hey mirai team. I dont know if anyone has ever mentioned this but having a video on the construction of a greenhouse or cold frame and what goes into it. What makes it function properly and gives best results. What do you look for when building a greenhouse and or cold frame.

I think it would be a great idea to do a stream or two on greenhouses. When I lived in NYC, I built a hobby greenhouse in my yard exclusively for bonsai, with a power source, which was used for 15 years. It was made of that corrugated polycarbonate stuff that filters U-V rays out. I think it was about 10’ x 12’ with not much headroom, and to be frank, the cons outweighed the pros in many ways, particularly in overwintering trees (I grow only winter-hardy trees, no tropicals.) Because of temperature fluctuation, covering the roof in winter was a necessity. But it was good to keep maples, beech etc. inside (with the help of fans!) in the summer to avoid leaf scorch

Hey Mirai team! I would like to see the following:
-Giant Sequoia
-Indoor jade
-More on subapline fir, silver fir
Douglas fir
-Cherry blossom (sakura)
-Wisteria
-Root grafting
-More on ceramics, I’d like to know more about ceramic terminology like cone temperatures, types of clay, differences between wood/gas/electric firing
-Natural styling of trees, from ceramics, pads, apex and species
-How to transport bonsai, to shows, selling, international

Thank you

and a styling and repotting for rosemary too!

Hi Mirai! You recently did Ryan commenting on last year’s Kokufu. Could you do similar for Trophy or other shows?

It would be great to have a stream about greenhouse strategy and technique. Greenhouse temperatures, humidity, ventilation, overwintering, when to use the greenhouse if it isn’t winter. I feel as if there are many aspects to proper use of a greenhouse as a tool for bonsai but aren’t many resources for proper use of a greenhouse as it relates to bonsai cultivation.

Hello Mira Team,

I have one idea, not quite stream idea specific, but I think it might be helpful (it would be for me for sure):

If there is an option to add to your personal calendar (google calendar, outlook one, or any other) upcoming streams by pressing them from the main page (or from the mail) it would be just great. For me constantly converting time is a nightmare.

Cheers,
Michal

I imagine this could be done by creating an .ics file for the stream and then making that available to download.

Would like to see any stage of black spruce, bristlecone pine and wisteria would be cool

Pieris japonica niwadori

I just listened to the Randy Knight field growing podcast and Ryan drops that he’s digging up his garden Pieris japonica to turn it into a bonsai.

I would love to see this as a feature as it is an interesting species with some great easthetic merit.

Thanks!

Howdy howdy!

Can we re-visit the Lebanon cedar again? Even the blue atlas will be cool.

Also I assume the Beech forest might need some new substrate eventually after being on the rocks for about 4 years now?

Also very curious as to how that bristlecone pine that was styled early back in the live days is doing and if it’s going to be placed into a more suitable pot?

Good morning, I recently acquired a Chinese Pistache and I am trying to get a Flamboyant tree (delonix ponciana) to work as a bonsai, I have browsed through the library to see if there is a stream for compound leave trees but couldn’t find one. I know this trees are not common for bonsai, as there is very little I could find online but I was wondering if Ryan had any experience with compound leave trees that could be applied to this ones.

I chose the pistache because there is one close to where I used to work that looks amazing in its winter silhouette, and the flamboyant because it reminds me of where I am from, PR. As there are flamboyant trees everywhere in the island.

Watched moss removal ministream today from February. Mention was made of a planned part 2 within a couple of weeks. Can you confirm if it did or will happen please.

Another idea,

Compound leafed varieties like Ash, etc. And something that really intrigues me is the Chestnut and Horse Chestnut family.

One more for Ash.
It is common plant in Europe, easy to collect but hard to create quality bonsai

Probably not ideal for a Super Tuesday, but this could be an interesting mini-stream. How about a stream where Ryan just designs a tree start to finish with no to very little dialog. No dialog directed directly at the audience for sure. It would give ppl a chance to observe what’s being done and use their bonsai intuition to understand what Ryan is doing and why.

What specifically would you do with technology like this? Is it just eye candy, or is there something meaningful that you would want to use it for?

The technology for scanning foliage and creating a 3D rendering is starting to mature. 2020 was a year of a lot of progress in the field of Neural Volume Rendering. (Here’s a very technical overview, but I don’t know of an overview for lay people: NeRF Explosion 2020 - Frank Dellaert. It has impressive animations, though.) Here are some short clips showing the relevance for bonsai from some of the researchers who developed this. In the videos you see an animated “video” that was created by the computer based on some number of static images. That is, the computer can show you the object from any perspective even if there was never a picture taken from that same point of view.

Once you can easily generate a 3D rendering of an actual tree, displaying it in Virtual Reality as in the video you showed is relatively straightforward (not easy, but not a research project either).
