Hello,
I am a newbie and got my first bonsai in a workshop 7 months ago. 4 days before it started to get yellow on different parts of the tree. I checked the roots, but there are a lot of white healthy ones. I could also not see any insects in the soil or an the tree itself. I know that it might not be able to safe the tree, but I would really like to not what the issue is…
I would guess it is a balance of water and o2
lots of thick moss on the top that would hold moisture in the soil
what type of soil is it in?
I am no expert, rather a beginner but I would remove that moss so you can actually check the soil itself for moisture levels
where are you located?
what season is it/
what type of tree is that?
Hi,
I Stil have the soil which I bought it in. Only thing I did was cutting und applying wire in march. 2 months ago I removed some wires that were too tight.
I am located in south germany and it is Fall right now. About 10 degrees and rainy.
Will remove the moss. Even thought the soil was not that wet and the roots are looking good as far as I can see that.
I think it is a Hinoki Cypress. Not sure if that is the correct English translation.
I looks like a cypress. The roots do look good, but if it is in organic soil it probably shouldn’t have moss on top. That much moss on top of organic soil will reduce the Oxygen.
I am no expert, but I would start by examining the soil and try to determine if it is organic soil aka dirt or if it;is a proper bonsai mix like 1:1:1: APL
You can’t really repot it now if it is fall
But it should probably be being kept on the drier side and allowed to dry out and get O2 back into the container.
Some branches may have been damaged during the wire removal process
It could be a balance of water and oxygen or it could be something else all together.
I would determine the soil type first
Remove the moss, you can save it in a tray and keep it moist
And then try to remember if the dying branches are the ones that had wire removed?
This late in the year I don’t know if there is really much else you can do…
Hopefully a cypress expert will chime in and sort us out,
Good luck
All of the above is true, I would add hinoki are a challenging tree to wire and not cause damage and have die back as a beginner. It’s a lot of die back in guessing the organic soil (balance of water and O2) then some wire damage to compound
Moss off, wire off and balance water and oxygen and let it do what it is going to do… Remember to think along tree timelines
