Hey let's crowdsource late-season juniper repot info!

Hey y’all =)

I’ve had a handful of questions from new-to-bonsai friends about juniper repots out here in 5b. Mostly, “can you look at my juniper and advise if it’s too late to repot?”

We’ve had a bit of a weird shoulder season out here…up until mid April we were having periodic but consistent dips all the way down to the low-20s°F, so some species have really been takin their dang time getting up and running.

Every spring and fall, I like to cruise the landscape nurseries around here to look for junipers that have good potential for bonsai. Some for myself, most to give away to new club members, friends, etc. That is to say, I’ve got a lot of junipers of various species/cultivars.

Since “is it too late to repot my juniper” has been a common question around here, I’d imagine it’s a common question elsewhere, so I would love to do some collective knowledge/experience sharing on appearance of various junipers and the viability of repotting them as we transition from mid- to late spring.

I’m gonna drop two photos for a bunch of juniper species/cultivars; one wide view, and one close-up of the foliage tips. Some were repotted this year, some last year, some are still in the nursery soil and have never been repotted. Anyone who has thoughts or input on any/all of these in terms of repot viability based on their appearance, please chime in! :sparkling_heart:

1: c. “Kishu,” repotted this year:

2: c. “Kishu,” still in nursery soil (I’m actually hoping someone will tell me I can repot this one and also remove some % of the foliage because this thing is absurd lmao)

3: This one is either Kishu or Fudo (or is it Fudu, I’ve heard both?) Repotted this spring:

4: c. “Itoigawa,” still in nursery soil:

5: c. “Itoigawa,” repotted this year:

6: c. “Itoigawa,” repotted this year:

7: j. chinensis c. “Hetzii,” repotted this year. I also did the deadwood work at the same time…it was 30$ so I was game with rolling the dice:

8: j. chinensis c. …something lol. Cultivar wasn’t specified at the nursery, but probably either “Spartan” or “Sea Green,” still in nursery soil:

9: j. chinensis, c. …also something :woman_shrugging: It was at a bonsai nursery listed as “shinpaku,” but I honestly doubt that and think it’s probably “Sea Green.” Aggressive repot out of nursery soil last fall, just to see what would happen. Container volume reduced by probably 90% (it handled the operation just fine):

10: j. chinensis c. “San Jose,” repotted spring of last year:

11: j. squamata c. “Parsonii,” forgot the wide view photo. Repotted spring of last year:

12: j. virginiana c. “Grey Owl,” still in nursery soil:

13: j. virginiana c. some kind of dwarf, I forget the name, repotted spring of last year:

14: j. scopulorum c. “Moonglow,” repotted this spring:

15: j. sabina c. “Broadmoor,” still in nursery soil:

Thanks for reading! And for building the collective knowledge on late season “is it too late to repot my juniper when it looks like this” questions in a searchable online format. =)

Also jesus f I’ve got a lot of junipers…if you’re in 5b, DM me and I’ll give you one of the raw stock for cheap if you live close enough to me lol
