Help needed with Larch

Hello everyone

Once again i could use some advice from you knowledgable people.

I had to repot my twin trunk larch in 2023 and noticed then that the left trunks root base was rotting. It also was less densly foliated and seemed geberally weaker. I did not do anything else with it in 2023 other than TLC.

In spring 2024 i tried to balance the stronger trunk with the weaker one by removing a large part of branches and equalizing it with the weaker trunk. It responded well in that year and pushed a lot of growth. I let the weaker side run and pruned the weaker side once. And that was it for 2024.

Now i was wondering if i should prune the long and leggy new growth of the weaker trunk back to two buds and even it out with the main trunk before it pushes new growth.

What so you think of that plan?

Here some pictures.

Good job reviving that smaller trunk!
It’s definitely strong enough for some pruning.

Thanks for the kind words! Im very glad it came through…

So would you also prune it now before the buds push or wait till after?

Thanks for any help btw!

You can prune it before it pushes growths, late winter early spring. And depending on the response a few more times during the growing season.
I prune my larch once in late January- February, depending on the weather and 2-3 more times during the growing season.
