Hey everyone, I have a nursery stock bald cypress that I have done almost no work on. I’m planning on repotting it in the spring, but I’m curious if the general consensus on bald cypress is to put them in glazed or unglazed containers. I have a couple of unglazed pots I was considering, but I feel like I’ve seen some Mirai bald cypress in glazed containers.
Right now the tree is very tall and somewhat slender, so I was thinking an oval would be fitting, but I’m open to suggestions. Also any ideas about how you might style this tree would be welcome .
Good morning. If you look in gallery 8 trees are unglazed and two are glazed so you can go either way
What’s your preference, Gary? I’m definitely leaning towards an unglazed container right now.
I have mine in a glazed oval which is mottled brown with a slightly lighter colored rim, so it is more subtle than many glazed containers but still brighter than most unglazed pots.
Nathan since it can go well with either I’d use what you have, providing fits aesthetic or if you don’t have, then I’d purchase glazed or unglazed based on which you feel would be the best fit and aesthetic! good to have choices:)

Honestly your tree has a lot of work that needs done prior to putting it into a bonsai pot! You will need to decide on a design style, the trees going to require a trunk chop to bring it down to working height, and since it’s nursery stock the root ball will require significant reduction and flattening to even get it into a bonsai pot. Last but not the least it likely has little or no taper being nursery stock so you’ll probably want to grow it a couple years to develop some taper.
My recommendation is to start by getting your tree into a grow pot, like the one pictured first. Reducing the root ball, and chop the trunk. Then let it recover for the rest of the season while you decide on the design. Note! Don’t put drain holes in the training pot, that way you can give it that swamp effect and let it recover strong!
Last thing go join the bald cypress FB page it’s loaded with tons of great info and design ideas. Good luck.
Appreciate the input and advice! I’m actually pretty happy with the overall scale and taper that the tree has right now, so I’ll be trying to get it into a ceramic this winter. My plan is to have a few different containers available so I can decide based on how much I’m able to reduce the roots, and what I think looks best in that moment.
