I have an American larch that was collected earlier this year. I’m wondering if I should slip pot it into a larger container before winter? I’m in zone 6b

I would leave it in the same container. the larger pot won’t provide much more winter protection and will disturb the roots some. If you are concerned about providing freeze protection you are better off to bury the pot in the ground.

You should not disturb the tree in it’s current container for two years, so if it does well next year you could consider a proper initial potting into a bonsai container in the spring of 2025.
