Bonsai Pottery & Ceramics

I am a potter!

I have been making bonsai pottery for a little over a decade. I don’t grow trees, but I attend monthly meetings at my local society in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I can learn a lot about what bonsai pottery requires to be a good home for a bonsai. I even recently started making kusamono pots! I mainly make wheel-thrown pots, but I can also hand-build them.

I want to expand my knowledge in Design Theory for Bonsai Pottery…

It’s hard to find specific information on the dynamics between pottery and trees. I do have a decent understanding of how to style a tree into one of the five core forms; however, once the tree is styled or being grown in a style, how do you discern the characteristics of a pot that match the tree’s design? I understand the very basics like Masculine = Corners and Feminine = Round. But I want to dive much deeper into the relationship between a tree and a pot, so I can craft better pottery for both aesthetics and utility. If you know of any resources (besides Mirai), please provide details on how to access them!

Please enjoy my pottery pictured in this post!

I made all these pots about a year or so ago… I don’t have any of them anymore- they’ve all been sold! I’ve made many more, but don’t have an official archive of them online yet. I just have hundreds of pictures on my phone… I do use Instagram & Facebook to share all stages of my work. I also have an online store that I recently stocked with Kusamono Pottery.

I am located in the USA and can ship to Canada & Mexico affordably. Prices start at $ 150 USD for overseas shipping… and that’s before other fees. I do take custom orders, just be aware that the wait time starts around one month (30 days), and that’s if everything goes well!
