State of Wonder: Is Portland The Epienter Of A Cool New American Bonsai Movement?

2015 September 18 - 00:07:22

(Bill’s Note: Podcast posted prior to the September 2017 Artisan’s Cup)

When most Americans think of bonsai — the craft of pruning and shaping small trees — they probably think of an ancient gardening craft practiced by lovers of Japanese culture.

Ryan Neil thinks it’s anything but.

With a story ripped from the movie “The Karate Kid,” he founded Bonsai Mirai, a leading international school in the hills outside Portland, and he’s partnered with cutting-edge architects and designers in an effort to make bonsai cool for a new generation.

From Sept. 25–27, they’re staging an ambitious exhibition of bonsai from around the country at the Portland Art Museum called the Artisan’s Cup with design help from Skylab Architecture. Their goal: to elevate bonsai into a contemporary art form worthy of, well, museums.

I just started listening to the podcasts this week after my kids went down for the night… they’ve all been awesome! Since I live here in LA, it’s been interesting to hear Ryan talk about his experiences when he would drive to LA on the weekends during his college days studying with my teacher.

I especially liked the podcast about Mr. Kimura and all the stories he told. I bet Ryan could go on for hours upon hours telling all these stories about his apprenticeship. Hopefully he’ll do another one and tell more stories! The Randy Knight one was cool too… and the trip to California, Naka, Peter Warren (super hilarious) and the Texas BBQ!

Everyone should listen to them!

nice to listen to on a thundery ice/rain soaked night…

The podcasts have been pretty great and coming out very regularly which is nice. Lots of in depth stuff to tide me over between Super Tuesdays.

The last one was a retrospective on wiring and I feel like it really helped me get some more context on wiring beyond the technical basics.
