Black leaves on JM

I know this tree needed help when I bought it. It was constantly overwatered at the nursery. My question is do I need to get it into some free drainage bonsai soil? Just don’t water for a while? I just drilled some holes in the bottom of the container so it can drain a bit better.

I agree that letting it dry a bit more between waterings is probably a good idea. You might want to remove some of the upper soil that does not contain many roots to help facilitate that, but not below the level of any nebari. Don’t let it dry too much before you water. You may want to insert a chopstick to use as a moisture gauge.

What Marty said, AND do not repot until spring. That is the time to get it into more free draining soil/substrate…
