Toyo Nishiki Quince Advice

Hello! I have started developing a Toyo nishiki quince for bonsai. This is my first year in development, starting with what used to resemble a small twig. This quince has tripled in size this year and I’ve cut it back TWICE. I would like to grow this in the usual clump style quince bonsai. I have a white quince and a small chojubai that seem pretty straightforward but this thing is a beast! Any advice on pruning or growing these for bonsai in general? Seems like the leaves and internodes are very long.

Thanks!

I saw this in another thread….check out Michael Hagedorn’s comprehensive articles on quince : chojubai quince- the Joy’s of chojubai and diminutive jewels.

Sorry no first hand experience with them

I suggest reading some of the blog post by Michael Hagadorn Related to chojubai. The concept should be more or less the same.

If it was my tree, I would do hard to cut back after the first flush next spring/summer. I would cut off the majority of branches to get ramification closer to the main trunk and primary branches. I think Andrew Robson also has a post or video about the importance of cutting back correctly and not just letting the branches grow out.

I’m glad you have such vigor. Mine are lagging a bit.
