Typically when you wire a BC you would defoliate it first as the leaf’s are to delicate to wire around with out damaging them. So it’s coming into fall and you would not want to defoliate now, the tree is storing energy for winter and this is vital for survival and your spring flush. Your next wiring opportunity will be just as buds begin to break in spring, however be aware that the branches will likely be a bit brittle from winter dormancy.
The next opportunity will be once the forest flush of foliage hardens off in spring, and the tree becomes energy positive, then you can defoliate and wire for design work.
