I just put this forest together and it’s starting to grow really well. The large tree has large branches on the lower part. Do I want to cut them back now to get the top to grow larger?
If you just put it together, I would not prune until fall so the foliage can drive new root production. I have found that when big branches are pruned that there are normally several smaller shoots from around the cut that can be used if need in the design. If not needed, rub them off and the wound will callus over after a a few years.
Do you know what this is on one of the bald cypress in my forest. This one tree is the only one with the brown patches on it.
I am not sure what it is. Could be fungal or it could just be some older needles that are dying off in favor of the newer needles further out the branch. If it is a limited number of needles I would pull them off and dispose of them since an otherwise healthy tree can fight off most infections. If it continues to expand then spray with a fungacide but try to keep it off the soil so you don’t kill off beneficial fungi there.
