I found this acer palmatum at my local urban nursery. I figure I will air layer about 1/4 the way up and use the first 6-8” as a shohin. $60 isn’t a huge bargain, but it’s really good for a maple around here! In total it’s about 36” tall from the soil.

I really like the shape and movement. Most of the ones I have seen here are grafted too high off roots at the base to make a good bonsai. Not sure why they do that…must think it makes for a better yard tree. We have all sorts of Japanese Maples in the neighborhood, and I never have seen one fail due to root rot, so?
I think you have a great start…can’t wait to see where it all goes.
