Safari Sprayable Systemic or Pyrethrin & Pots

Hey All,

So I’m gearing up to treat some Juniper material with Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide. I’ve not yet used Safari before, hence the main question.

What: A variety of Juniper species; some in nicer ceramics and some still in development containers. Mostly all Mame/Shohin/Chumono
Where: Santa Monica, CA Zone 11a
When: Early March 2025

Not having used Safari before, my main question is this; Will it stain or compromise your ceramics at all?

I’m not too worried about those in plastic or Tokoname training/grow pots. I am worried about my actual bonsai containers though.

Any other precautions I should consider outside of the typical handling directions?

Are there certain weather or UV conditions I should consider as well for ideal application? I’ve read that it’s fine to use it in full sun or leave plants where they lie after applying, unlike other chemical treatments where shading during or after application is recommended.

Also, I’ve been using Bonide Pyrethrin on some JBP currently in development. Knowing that puts off a bit of an oily-sheen and has quite a strong paint-thinner-like scent, I try to avoid spraying it on anything BUT the plant, and have thankfully not needed to treat anything already planted in higher-quality ceramics - In case so, I’d likely try and protect the container from residual spray. Yet, the same question remains, is that extra care worth it? Or despite the smell/oily nature, should I not worry about it coming in contact with my pots?

Any insight is helpful from those with first-hand experience using either of these treatments!

Thanks in advance,

-Nick
