Red pine buds opening in fall

I have a red pine that is opening it’s buds now in late summer. Aug 31. Is this normal? If not, why is it happening and what are the implications?

I think there might be two reasons. The first and most obvious would be if there’s been some significant removal of foliage in the year (pruning or damage). The other reason is if it’s super healthy and the weather has been kind so the tree thinks - hey let’s go for it. The implications are more ramification - good news, or if a frost hits (depends on where you live) the foliage will not have hardened off and will die back. I’ve had this before on JBP and the new little shoots survived the mild winter and carried on growing again in spring.
