Hey all, I have a question about when Ryan talks about a tree that is “energy positive” or “energy negative,” and am having a difficult time understanding this concept. Which side is positive or negative? I’m wondering if it might be easier for me to think of it in terms of kinetic or potential energy. I’m reading Pinching vs. Pruning | Bonsai Mirai where it talks about pruning only when the tree is an energy positive state. How do you actually tell this? Do you look at the roots? The foliage? The speed of new growth?

Hi, I’ve started the fundamentals streams, and Ryan always says that the elongating species have to be pruned when the new foliage is mature. Until this point, the tree is not be able to create energy, and removing the new shots the tree suffers wasting energy. How long after the the tree becomes energy positive will it restore the reserves it used for the growth it just pushed out? Not looking for a specific amount of time, just rough idea. From the streams, tree return to an energy positive state when the new growth hardens off. It also seems like a tree has enough resources for maybe 3 pushes of growth in a season (deciduous).
