My first Acer palmatum/Japanese Maple bonsai/Mountain Maple

Hi,

I have identified a potential flaw, but i’m unsure until i submit this on the Q&A

As you can see at the lower trunk with the black circle there is 4 branches that are staggered but close together. Then a straight section with some space and then a left branch.

Looking to see what you guys thoughts are in this? Will i be looking to remove maybe the right side second branch?

Thanks, vern

I agree that the second branch on the right side is the one to go if you decide to remove one. That leaves a fairly large gap on that side so I might consider a thread graft to the right in the straight section.

My two cents which is probably worth two cents. Ryan says shouldn’t remind
Ove large branches because replacing them with thin branches like a thread graft looses proportion. My problem with the branch on right is it has no movement. I’d try to put movement in it and cut off the top. That is two straight and youlll have a more interesting tree. But what do I know

All good points. I was also thinking about thread grafting in that negative space and leave it run for a few years.

I also have another problem i need to deal with is having 3 branches coming off the trunk, so taking the apex down will create even more imbalance and leaving the tree bare.

Maybe airlayer the top and you get a three trunked tree?

Another angle would be helpful to make suggestions

I agree with jockpine …the issue is the next junction up and I would remove the straight one on the left almost coming at the viewer where jockpine circled

Hey guys, done my first leaf drop pruning and its was my first time seeing the tree naked. Corrected flaws and done some wiring and directional pruning. Hope i done a good first time…

The picture with the sun on it was yesterday and today is the other picture with more pruning and the apex thinned out.

Hey guys. Created more taper in the upper trunk and cut back to a side branch and wired the upper trunk also to take out the straightness in it and have more movement to the left

Nice job on the apex. I am wondering if you need the branch that appears to come out the front and is then wired fairly straight to the left. Yes, the left will be a bit bare for a year or two if you remove it, but you have some smaller branches in the area that can easily be grown out to fill the void.

Looks great…nit picking but the second branch on the left is totally horizontal and perpendicular to the container and catches my eye…with that said it’s an excellent tree anyone would add to their collection.

I just reread the thread and realized I already said that :joy:

Thanks for the kind comments. I wired the trunk i tried my best to put some movement into it. I’ve just posted this up for the upcoming live forum. I do have a structural flaw left at the mid point on the trunk where i have two primary branches coming off…

I would consider the left as your front. Reduce the branch to where it forks right and wire it clockwise to reduce it coming directly at the viewer. I’m assuming there’s a slight angle change to be found in there to support this as well … unless the 2D is fooling me. I seem to find this line and perspective much more interesting.

Strongly agree with @NEBeech with the Left as front :+1:t3:

Nope. Right as front. Hard to make left front without seeing nebari and major branch in your face

Also if blue circle bar you’ll have to deal with that and branch with arrow needs to come down and branch to left would be better following squiggly line in red. My two cents:)
