Initial work on RMJ

Hello All,
I’m am participating in a workshop this weekend and hope to do the initial stying on one of my recently purchased RMJ yamadori. 2 questions…

  1. Does it look healthy enough to do the work and would now be an appropriate time? According to the seller it was collected in 2018 and I am seeing roots growing out of the bottom of the pot.
  2. If yes to the question above, since the temperature will drop below freezing the next couple of nights, should I protect it from freezing before I work on it this weekend?

I’m am in Northern VA zone 7a. Thanks for your advice!!

Do what you normally do beforehand but I would protect it after styling as no doubt you’ll be reducing the amount of foliage it has.
