I did some initial pruning and styling on a new Hinoki Cypress last weekend. Whiskey bottle on the after photo for size. Here is a before and after.

Has he opened back up since moving to Statesville?
Your tree reminds me of my dawn redwood that I chopped this year. It was over 15’ tall. Now it’s this. It dropped all of the old leaves to replace them with much more efficient ones.

Sorry for the delay. Kept forgetting to take a tape measure out there with me. It’s like 3.5" at the base. The base I can see at least. I haven’t done the nebari work yet.
