There are lots of species that do great in arid regions for Bonsai cultivation. Here are a few that I work with:
- Mesquite | Prosopis glandulosa
- Desert Ironwood | Olneya tesota
- Palo Verde | Cercidium spp.
- Bursera fagaroides
- Bursera microphylla
- Operculicarya decaryi
- Operculicarya pachypus
There are many more out there to choose from, but the aforementioned ones are all brilliant material.

Here is a photo of one of my larger Bursera specimens that will be at the US National show this year. For scale, the pot is 32" wide by 19"deep by 3" high.
