My 30year old 12" mughu responds well to the above bud regime, it’s buds usually are only 3/4" max. Transfering IT over to fall pruning to see how it responds…
Mirai all the way!!!
Hi Alex,
Sorry to reply to something from 2018 but a question.
You say -
‘So prune after they harden if you have visible buds otherwise let them be to accumulate as much “traffic” as possible to get backbudding and then prune the following year.’
If you don’t have visible buds, and therefore don’t prune after the post harden and wait for next year; when do you prune in the next year if you have a candle that you would like to shorten?
Good question.
I gather at some point that branch will produce some back budding.
If you “balance the energy” of the rest of the tree, now known as “zero out the system” you will increase the chance of back budding there I believe
That’s IF your still talking Scotts pine, they will backbud.
Some pines do not, usually, on old wood.

Re-Watch the, several, Mirai pine videos.
Short needle single flush.
Long needle single flush.
Multiple flush.
Outlyers Pines…

The APP should be out, soon. It will ‘codefy’ and enumerate most pines into a type.
.
Younger trees react easily with backbudding. Older trees, not so much. Organic fertilizer and micro-nutrients; balanced water and oxygen. Good soil composition. Happy trees.
.
Just a painfull reminder— when pot temps hit 90F, get them out of that 100+ sun… the roots fry in an hour! Doesnt matter how wet they are.

Thanks. Currently watching the pine videos again.
Do you know for sure the app is out soon or you just guessing? Hope it is soon though
Waiting for it.
I think they found it was a bigger project than anticipated, adding parts as they needed to add info.
Covid didn’t help.
They want to do a good job… and have a usable document.
Just how DO you go about documenting …Life, the Universe, and EVERYTHING else… so mere mortals can understand?

The depth and breath of Mirai videos is awesome. I go back and rewatch to learn… I’ve seen that most of it is spot on; usually differeing due to the young age responses of my trees or my desert environment survival techniques. There is also a nuanced deviation in some sub species responses.
One important point I keep seeing people running into… a Austrian black pine… is NOT a Japanese black pine…, and doesn’t respond the same.
.
Im having great success with my S.E. swamp cypress and abismal failure with N. W. (local) picea, hemlock, and some pines… crazy heat and dry…
Losing several large trees is pretty devistating.

Bonsai On!
@Jockpine , Vernon!
How do you treated tour tree now?
Pop in a current photo of your Scots pine.

Hi Kurt,
I don’t have that pine anymore.
I will post my scots pine soon once i get the chance.
I’ve had it growing in the ground from 2018 - 2022 and last year i dug it up and potted it in a growing training box and gave it its first style also.
Will post soon i get the chance and maybe you could advise on potential styles.
Anyone recommend a new design for the apex…
