Dennis Vojtilla methods quesiton

When Dennis says he prunes shoots back to one node once they get to four or five nodes, is he doing this before the leaves harden off? or do you think he waits?

I believe the answer is no, if a branch is taking off you want to control it and cut it back as soon as there are 4 or 5 nodes. That’s for maples and other species with an opposite leaf pattern. If it is alternating, you should cut back to two buds.

I should also add, this is a refinement technique and is used to keep the twigs from getting too thick.
