Black pine candle orientation

Does anyone have a reference to Ryan saying that black pines, or any pine, in development should have their candle tips oriented upwards?

Online someone is saying Ryan recommends candle tips be oriented horizontally as it encourages back buds. I think it’s the branch being horizontal and tips being up that encourages back budding and minimum photosynthesis.

I’m pretty sure they are wrong, but I can’t find a video reference.

I also remember it being branches laid out, but tips turned up. The tips turned up promotes strong sap flow in the branch. This sap flow can the adjusted by candle cutting or candle breaking depending upon the strength of the branch. Either will reduce sap flow to the tip and also reduce auxin flow back along the branch. This combination should result in back budding. Sorry I don’t feel like digging through my notes to find the exact video.
